The story behind the Watermelon Pages

Ruth with her marvelous watermelon sorbet.

Some years ago, I wrote a tune called Watermelon Sorbet, in honour of my sister Ruth's delicious watermelon sorbet. The tune appeared on my first album Ever Brightening Day. One day I was listening to CBC Radio One, and suddenly, there was my tune at the beginning of my favourite show, Richardson's Roundup! I was thrilled that they had decided to play my tune that day, but before I could even dash off an email to thank them, they played the tune again the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that, and the day after that and... in short, my tune Watermelon Sorbet became the opening theme to "Richardson's Roundup."  Of course, all good things must come to an end and sadly, my tenure as the opening of a national CBC radio show ended when the show was completely overhauled in the fall 0f 2003 and my tune was axed. The humiliation of it all! Thankfully many Canadians all over the country still remember my tune with fondness and appreciate the nostalgia of hearing it again as a reminder.

In the course of my travels as a musician, I often talk about "Richardson's Roundup" and I often talk about my sister Ruth's watermelon sorbet. Watermelon sorbet is one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted in my life. Sorbet, for those who are unfamiliar with it, is made in an ice cream maker but it has no cream or milk in it at all. Just fruit juice, lemon juice, and lots of sugar. You can make it with any kind of fruit, but watermelon seems particularly suited for a frozen dessert. Yum! Anyway, I often get asked at my concerts for a recipe. So Ruth and I decided we needed to put the recipe up on my website. But this got us thinking, what about other information about watermelons? Surely people need to know more about these honourable fruits, so misunderstood and so delicious. Thus was born the idea for The Watermelon Pages.

We will be adding more information about the history and uses of the watermelon, so please check back, but for now, here's the recipe, so enjoy!
